What Is Required for The Pet Cottage to accept a pet into its guardianship program?

The Pet Cottage accepts pets based on our ability to keep our promise to provide a home for them for the rest of their lives.

Each situation is unique. We assist on a case-by-case basis, dependent on the needs, and our availability to meet those needs.

A Pet Cottage professional will schedule an in-person visit to meet the pet and to determine if the pet is a good candidate for our guardianship program.

We are thorough in selecting guardians. We conduct home visits, meet and greets, and call references. Check-ins and on-going support is provided to our lifelong guardians.

Once a part of our pack, always a part of our pack.

The donation request to match a pet for life is $1500.

If the pet needs to be seen by our veterinarian to have vaccinations updated and/or a health needs assessment, the family relinquishing ownership will be asked to make an additional contribution to cover these expenses.

The pet must be up to date on the following or must be seen by our veterinarian.

  • Spay/Neuter

  • Current Rabies and Distemper Vaccines

  • Heartworm test within past year

  • For senior dogs (7 and older), a full senior panel

Based on your application, the home visit, and behavioral assessment, The Pet Cottage will determine if acceptance into our pack is the best solution for your pet.

  • Once accepted a good faith deposit of $500 must be paid.

  • At the time you relinquish ownership of the pet, the remainder of the requested donation, $1000, is due.

  • Each application is reviewed within three (3) business days. You will receive a phone call from a representative of The Pet Cottage to discuss your application and provide additional details as necessary.
